Overeaters Anonymous

Who?

Overeaters Anonymous GB provides support and a recovery programme for compulsive eaters through over 100 support groups across the UK.

What?

A short, low budget PR campaign to raise the profile of the organisation throughout the UK, and to raise awareness that compulsive overeating is as common as anorexia and bulimia. The organisation wanted to encourage a two-way discussion about eating disorders and bring the subject to life.

How?

Anonymous radio interviews conducted with compulsive eating sufferers who could tell their story. Exclusive first time access to a meeting was also granted to one UK newspaper and one magazine. A survey of OA members was undertaken which unveiled several very interesting news hooks. A regular stream of press releases was issued to the men’s, women’s and teenage magazines about eating disorders hooked on to times such as Christmas and exam stress.

Outcome

17 radio interviews were secured and Cosmopolitan and the Mail on Sunday were given exclusive access which resulted in large features. 30 pieces of consumer coverage were achieved. Hits on the website doubled and there was a significant increase in new members.
